Sugiyama Jogakuen, which originally started as a sewing school, was founded by Masakazu Sugiyama to provide young women with practical training. After three years of studying sewing among women in the Watanabe Sewing School in Tokyo, he opened the Nagoya Women's Sewing School on his own estate in Nagoya. Now, 95 years after its foundation, Sugiyama Jogakuen has developed into a integrated women's educational institution including a kindergarten, an elementary school, a junior high school, and a senior high school at the Yamazoe campus, a junior college and a university with a graduate school, including the new School of Information-Culuture, at the Hoshigaoka campus and the school of Human Sciences,including the Graduate School of Human-Relations Studies, at the Nisshin campus.

Sugiyama jogakuen University started with the school of Home Economics and opened the School of Literature in 1972, in 1977 the Graduate School was established and since that time has offered a master's degree in Home Economics. The Junior College came into existence with a two-year intensive program in 1969.

The School of Human Sciences was founded. This campus is located in Nisshin City, near the Hoshigaoka campus. In 1991, the school of Home Economics, which was composed of the Department of Food and Nutrition and the Department of Clothing and Textile, was reorganized to become the school of Life Studies.It includes three departments:Food and Nutrition, Human Environment, and Social Sciences.
