How to Search
1. Search by Keyword
You can search for information on research activities containing the keyword entered. There are two types of search: Basic Search and Advanced Search.
The keyword search results are shown in red.
1.1 Basic Search
Basic Search is a method that involves entering all of the information on the research activity you wish to find at once.
- In "Search by Keyword" on the top page, check the research activity information that you wish to search, enter a keyword, and click the "Search" button.
- When entering multiple keywords, separate the keywords with a space.
- Up to ten keywords can be entered.
- Check “Includes any of the keywords” to perform an OR search. An AND search is conducted if not checked.
- If you wish to search for a keyword containing spaces, surround the phrase with double quotation marks (“) (Phrase search).
1.2 Advanced Search
Advanced Search is a method that involves selecting one piece of information on research activities and specifying details about that information to perform the search.
- Click "Advanced Search" on the top page.
- Specify the research activity information you wish to find by clicking on Research Activity Information at the top of the screen. (This is "Researcher" by default.)
- When entering multiple keywords, separate the keywords with a space.
- Check “Includes any of the keywords” to perform an OR search.
- If you wish to search for a keyword containing spaces, surround the phrase with double quotation marks (“).
- Specify AND, OR, or NOT as the logic condition.
- The selectable research activity information is shown in the table below.

1.3 Displaying Search Results
1.3.1 Display of number of hits
The number of hits is shown for each research activity by running a Basic Search. If you select the research activity information you wish to view and click the "Select result list" button to proceed to the list of search results for the specified information.
1.3.2 List of search results
The list of search results is shown if you specify Advanced Search or proceed from the list of number of hits in a Basic Search. You can proceed to the detailed display of information by clicking on the name of the research activity information (Researcher, Research Institute, Research Subject, Research Resource).
The items shown in the list of search results are shown below.

The list of search result can be sorted in the following order.
| Sort item | Sort details |
|---|---|
| score (common) | The items are shown in ascending order by score. The score is determined by the frequency of keywords and the distance between keywords (when multiple keywords are specified). |
| Organization (common) | The information is displayed according to the institution specified. The order is basically determined by institution type (primary key) and location (secondary key). Researcher information is sorted by institution, research subject information is sorted by institution implementing research and research resource information is sorted by owning institution. |
| Revised Date (common) | Data with the latest revised date is shown first. |
| Researcher (Researcher) | Displayed in the order of the reading of researcher names. |
| Subject (Subject) | The information is displayed according to the character encoding of the subject. |
| Resource (Resource) | The information is displayed according to the character encoding of the resource. |
1.3.3 Search refinement
It is possible to refine a search when the list of search results is displayed.
- Specify a logic condition (AND, NOT)
- Select the search item from the menu. Search items vary depending on the type of research activity information.
- Enter keyword(s) and click the "Search" button.
2. Search by Category
Search by Category is a method that involves searching for the desired information by following links in information that is categorized in advance.
Click the type of research activity information you wish to find from "Search by Category" on the top page.
2.1 Researcher Information
A list of researcher categories will be shown if you click "Researchers" in "Search by Category."
2.1.1 Categories
The categories of researcher information are as follows.
(1) Institute category
- Categorized by researchers' institutions. A list of researchers that belong to the institution is shown by following the research institution name.
a. National Institute / Independent Administrative Institute
- A list of governing ministries is shown by clicking. Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the name of the governing ministry.
b. Semigovernmental Organization / Authorized Organization
- A list of governing ministries is shown by clicking. Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the name of the governing ministry.
c. Public Research Institute
- Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the name of the region.
d. University
- Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the school type.
e. Public Corporation
- Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the corporation type (foundation, association).
f. Enterprise's Research Institute
- A list of industry types is shown by clicking. Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the industry type.
g. Others
- A list of other institutions is shown by clicking.
- The list of research institutions may link to both the research institution name and the number of data hits.
A list of researchers that belong to the institution is shown by clicking the research institution name.
A list of subordinate institutions (such as faculties in a university) is shown by clicking on the number of hits.

(2) Research field category
- Categorized by the research fields of researchers.
- Research fields are generally divided into three phases. A list of medium categories is shown by clicking the name of the main category. Information on minor categories is shown by clicking the name of the medium category. Information on the researcher is shown by clicking the name of the minor category.
- Check the checkbox to the left of the category name and click the "Display a list" button to display a list of researchers in the specified field. Multiple selections can be made.
(3) Alphabetic order
- Categorized by the alphabetic order of the reading of the researchers' names.
- A list based on the alphabetic order is shown by clicking. A list of researchers is shown by clicking the text.
2.1.2 Search refinement
It is possible to refine a search when the list of search results is displayed.
Enter the keyword you wish to find or select it from the menu and then click the "Search" button.
The logical criteria is to perform an AND search for the item entered or selected.
2.2 Research Institute Information
A list of research institution categories will be shown if you click "Institutes" in "Search by Category."
2.2.1 Categories
The categories of research institution information are as follows.
(1) Institute category
- Categorized by the type of research institution.
a. National Institute / Independent Administrative Institute
- A list of governing ministries is shown by clicking. Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the name of the governing ministry.

2.3 Research Subject Information
A list of research subject information categories will be shown if you click "Subjects" in "Search by Category."
2.3.1 Categories
The categories of research subject information are as follows.
(1) Institute category
- Categorized by the type of research institutions. A list of research subjects implemented by the institution is shown by following the research institution name.
a. National research institution/ independent administrative agency/ institution for joint university use
- A list of governing ministries is shown by clicking. Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the name of the governing ministry.
b. Special administrative corporation/ authorized corporation
- A list of governing ministries is shown by clicking. A list of research institutions is shown by clicking the name of the governing ministry.
c. Public testing and research institution
- Information on the research institution is shown by clicking the name of the region.
d. Academic institution
- A list of research institutions is shown by clicking the school type.
e. Public-interest corporations, etc.
- A list of research institutions is shown by clicking the corporation type (foundation, association).
f. Corporate research facility
- A list of industry types is shown by clicking. A list of research institutions is shown by clicking the industry type.
g. Other institutions
- A list of research institutions is shown by clicking.

- A list of research systems is shown by clicking. A list of research subjects is shown by clicking the name of the research system.
